JILO – Mirage’s Colours (NUNS072D)

One of the joys of running NuNorthern Soul is discovering artists who bring something fresh and heartfelt to the Balearic sound. JILO is one of those.

He’s a real polymath — an engineer, artist, DJ, festival curator, even an academic with a PhD in computer music — but what drew me in were his productions: detailed, kaleidoscopic and full of emotion. Back in 2022, his debut on San Francisco’s Dream Chimney (the same home as Sorcerer) caught my ear straight away, and I knew he was someone I wanted to work with.

So I’m delighted to welcome him to the NuNorthern Soul family with his debut EP for the label, Mirage’s Colours. It’s a stunning set of four tracks, each one carrying its own little vision, perfectly tuned to soundtrack those sun-drenched days and starry nights.

The opener, “Sunset Embrace”, takes its time to set the scene — an ambient intro that slowly swells into a mid-tempo groove, dub-disco bass-lines, and melodies that shimmer as brightly as the fading sun.

“Shadow’s Tango” has that lightly Italian dream house feel, with rolling beats, piano stabs and sunlit guitars, while “Blue Velvet” shows off JILO’s gift for layering melodies and grooves, topped off with some seriously fluid fretless bass.

He rounds things off with “Aurora”, a slow-burner that gazes skywards — patient, spacey, and deeply immersive. It’s a track that feels like lying back and watching the night sky open up, before easing down into field recordings and ambient chords.

Outside of his own productions, JILO is also part of the Rennes-based collective La Rennes des Voyous — a group pushing music, art and community forward in their own unique way. You can check them out on SoundCloud and follow their journey on Instagram.

Alongside his work in the studio, JILO is a DJ who knows how to take listeners on a journey. Recently, he teamed up with his Rennes-based friend and fellow selector DJ Sanza for a special back-to-back session that captures the spirit of NuNorthern Soul perfectly.

The mix drifts effortlessly between sun-soaked grooves, deep Balearic textures, and dancefloor-ready rhythms, showcasing the pair’s shared love of music that moves both body and soul. It’s a set that feels just as comfortable soundtracking a hazy afternoon in the garden as it does a late-night session under the stars.
