George Solar × NuNorthern Soul: From Sunbeams to Moonbeams

All releases artwork

With the release of Moonbeams In Dub — Part 03, another chapter in the relationship between George Solar and NuNorthern Soul is complete.

It’s a relationship that now stretches back five years and has grown into a substantial body of music — original productions, collaborations, remixes and dub versions, all connected by George’s love of bass, space, rhythm and the musical landscape of Ibiza.

With all three parts of Moonbeams In Dub now released, we’ve brought the complete story together in dedicated George Solar × NuNorthern Soul playlists on Spotify and Bandcamp.

But first, back to where it started.

Los Rayos Del Sol

George made his NuNorthern Soul debut in 2021 with Los Rayos Del Sol.

Although it was his first solo release, George was already an experienced writer, producer, DJ and musical collaborator. Recorded across various Ibiza studios alongside long-time collaborator Mike Alcaras, the EP featured contributions from Peter Bindels, Matthias Kamelman, Rainer Winter, Ian “Fly” Harper and Antonio Blakstad.

Across Infrared, Luz, UV and Neblina, George began establishing a sound that would continue to evolve over the following years.

Dub was already central to the music, but so were Latin and tropical rhythms, electronics, guitars and live instrumentation. The common thread was Ibiza — and George’s desire to make the kind of music he wanted to hear while DJing as the sun disappeared over the horizon.

The following year, George returned to those recordings with Los Rayos In Dub.

Rather than commissioning a conventional remix EP, he invited Dubvisionist, Beach Messiah, Ken Fan, Chris Coco and Jin Yerei to approach the originals in the spirit of Jamaican version culture.

The results moved between deep dub, jazz, Latin rhythms, disco dub and South American influences while retaining a connection to the original recordings.

More importantly, Los Rayos In Dub established an idea that would become a recurring part of George’s work with NuNorthern Soul: give other producers access to the music and enough freedom to completely rethink it.

From the sun to the moon

Moonbeams

Where Los Rayos Del Sol was inspired by sunlight, Moonbeams moved into the night.

Across Medialuna, Moonbeams, Countermoon, Lunaticotina, O Luar and Moonbeams Reprise, George explored the moon and its different phases through dub, cumbia, samba, electronics and global rhythms.

The record continued his collaborative relationship with Ken Fan, while the closing Moonbeams Reprise was a spontaneous improvisation recorded in memory of Klaus Schulze.

And then George decided to hand the music over again.

Moonbeams In Dub

This time, the idea grew beyond a single remix EP.

Moonbeams In Dub unfolded across three separate releases, with each producer given the freedom to interpret George’s music in their own way.

Part 01 featured Tribilin Sound, Marshall Watson and Ken Fan. The guiding principle was less about dub as a particular genre and more about dub as a mindset: space, restraint, experimentation and the freedom to reshape.

Part 02 took things deeper with Dubvisionist, Razoof and Roots Artefact, bringing together different histories and approaches while remaining connected through rhythm, bass and soundsystem culture.

Moonbeams in Dub part 2

And finally, Moonbeams In Dub — Part 03 brings the series to its conclusion.

Long-time George Solar collaborator Mike Alcaras takes on O Luar, Marshall Watson returns to push Countermoon somewhere deeper and more direct, while Silvio Astier takes Lunaticotina into completely new territory.

Across all three EPs, that’s ultimately what Moonbeams In Dub has been about: trusting another artist with your music and seeing where they take it.

As George puts it:

“Dub… doesn’t push itself on you — it draws you in.”
