Roots Artefact: From Seafront Hi-Fi to NuNorthern Soul

NuNorthern Soul has always celebrated artists who live and breathe music — those who not only play records but build the culture around them. Our latest EP from Roots Artefact captures that exact spirit, rooted in the rich heritage of reggae and sound system culture.

Behind Roots Artefact is Saimon Kozevnikov — a dedicated roots reggae lover, vinyl enthusiast, label owner, and co-founder of Seafront Hi-Fi. Since 2016, Seafront Hi-Fi has been delivering authentic reggae music and culture to Estonia, carrying forward the traditions of the great Jamaican and British sound systems. Whether in a packed club, on a Baltic street corner, or deep in a forest campground, the sound is always crystal clear, warm, and heavy.

The Seafront Hi-Fi rig is a labour of love — a hand-built sound system that pays tribute to the pioneers. From the deep Mogale scoops loaded with 18” Fane drivers to the precision super-tweeter boxes and analogue preamps, every component is chosen for both sonic power and character.

The system is run by Saimon Kozevnikov and Jan Kulikov, two figures deeply embedded in the Baltic reggae community. Their record bags are packed with hand-picked original classics, modern productions, rare treasures, and exclusive dubplates from their network of international producers. This combination of authenticity and freshness has seen Seafront Hi-Fi appear at events across Estonia, Finland, and Lithuania — always bringing a tune for every taste.

Saimon: The Man Behind the Music

Saimon’s journey goes far beyond DJ sets. He is the driving force behind Strictly Dub Records and Seafront International, two labels dedicated to preserving and pushing forward reggae culture. For over a decade, he’s been pressing heavyweight cuts on vinyl, giving space to both timeless roots reggae and cutting-edge productions.

A lifelong collector, Saimon’s sets weave together the deep foundations of roots reggae, the punch of digital, and the sparkle of contemporary releases. His approach is about more than music — it’s about community, heritage, and keeping the sound system tradition alive in the modern era.
