Ondas Horizontales Remixes: NuNorthern Soul’s New Balearic Chapter

NuNorthern Soul is back on the shoreline, presenting the first in a series of remix specials from Tambores En Benirras’ Ondas Horizontales. Originally released in 2023, the album was written and produced by Graham Newby aka DJ Gripper, with artwork by Johnny Kavannagh, and recorded between the sun-bleached sands of Ibiza and the less likely, though no less inspiring, setting of Barrow-in-Furness.

Now the waves return in 2025, refreshed and reshaped by a handpicked crew of Balearic pioneers, rising stars, and close friends — each offering their own perspective on Newby’s evocative originals.

Four New Visions

• Ruf Dug takes on Mi Suno Vive En Reverb, twisting it into a dawn-ready piece of Balearic yoga bliss. Known for straddling Manchester’s underground roots and Ibiza’s open skies, Ruf Dug channels both here, stretching out the track into a meditative, bass-rich flow.

• Steve Cobby (Fila Brazillia) steps up for Extensor Entrgado, delivering a nine-minute trip through synth-heavy funk grooves and cosmic soul. A remix that earns its place as both a peak-time dance-floor cut and a deep listener’s journey.

• Andres y Xavi reimagine Templos Del Sol with bouncing Iberian space-lab energy, steering it far from the original’s contemplative Japanese-inspired garden into something vibrant, addictive, and floor-ready.

• Simon Sheldon closes proceedings with his rework of Un Placer Celestial. A veteran of electronic music, Sheldon leans into downtempo textures and smoky atmospheres, recalling echoes of Massive Attack and the late-night chill-out tents that have always been part of the Balearic story.

A New Series Unfolds

This EP marks the beginning of an extended exploration. Newby invited twelve of his favourite artists to revisit Ondas Horizontales — a reflection of NuNorthern Soul’s ethos of collaboration, community, and timeless sound. Each rework offers not just a remix, but a new horizon; a way of hearing the album afresh, through the ears of others who share a deep connection to the Balearic spirit.

With Roots Artefact’s Different Perspective arriving earlier this month, and now Ondas Horizontales Remixes launching this series, it’s clear that NuNorthern Soul continues to evolve while staying true to its guiding principle: music without borders, rooted in feeling.
