Ahead of their return to NuNorthern Soul, we caught up with Coyote — Richard Hampson (Ampo) and Timm Sure — long-standing collaborators and the driving force behind Is It Balearic? Recordings.
Over the years, they’ve built a distinct body of work across their own imprint and labels including International Feel, Music For Dreams, Needwant, MM Discos and Citizens of Vice — always rooted in feel, space and a quietly detailed approach to production.
Their new mini LP, The Higher The Sky, The Deeper The Ocean, lands soon — a six-track release that deepens the sound they first explored on Everything Moves, Nothing Rests, moving further into atmospheric, dub-leaning and meditative territory.
Q&A
Where are you in the world right now, and what does a typical day look like when you’re making music?Timm: The Balearic heartland (Notts).
Ampo: Nottinghamshire countryside. We tend to work in three-hour bursts in the studio, usually at weekends.
Do you remember the first piece of music that genuinely stopped you in your tracks?
Timm: Slade – How Does It Feel.
Ampo: The intro to Ain’t Nobody by Chaka Khan.
How would you describe your sound to someone hearing you for the first time — without using genre labels?
Timm: Authentic and honest.
Ampo: Laid back.
What usually comes first for you: a feeling, a rhythm, or a melody?
Timm: For me, a bass-line.
Ampo: Finding a nice percussive rhythm.
What draws you to the NuNorthern Soul world, and how does it align with how you approach music?Timm: Phil, and his enthusiasm and positivity.
Ampo: It fits our sound nicely, and Phil is a genuinely nice guy who helps.
Is there a particular time of day, place, or state of mind where your music feels most at home?Timm: Mildly stoned is good.
Ampo: We have something for all situations and states, but warm late afternoons feel perfect.
What are you listening to at the moment that might surprise people?
Timm: RSD – Dubplate Archive, and Mala – Anti War Dub. Revisiting some proper dubstep.
Ampo: Al Wootton – Glorias. An amazing piece of music.
When someone finishes listening to your music, what do you hope lingers with them?
Timm: I hope our music helps people escape this world for a brief moment.
Ampo: Some kind of message that helps — or simply a moment that brightens someone’s day.
